What is A Blog in Marketing? Overview
A common question I see is “What is a Blog?” At one point, I had the same exact question. Almost every website or platform you visit has some sort of blog. Of course, websites have been around a lot longer than blogs but, blogs have become popular over time.
In the late part of the 90’s blogs were being regularly written but, they did not become popular until 1999. According to www.wpvirtuoso.com, in 2013 there were over 152,000,000 blogs reported and 172,800 blogs created every day! WOW! Those are some amazing numbers.
Are blogs expected to increase in the future? You bet your bottom dollars they are! There are over 3.75 million people on the internet everyday.
Imagine how many people you can reach. According to www.statista.com, by 2020, the number of people actually blogging is expected to increase to 31.7 million.
Blogs can broadcast anything from political to sports news. Personal journals or hobbies. Online brand building of an individual or a company. It can be purely just for entertainment as well.
Even, if you don’t have a business. A blog can be turned into a home based business itself and that is the best part about a blog. There have been many bloggers that blogged just for the fun of it and now they are making comfortable incomes working right from home.
For example Abby Lawson, Just a Girl and Her Blog. Abby blogs about organizing and planners. Well, Abby thought no one would ever read her blog. Today her blog is a family business.
Take Michelle Shroeder-Gardner, Making Sense of Cents blog, Michelle helps provide resources and financial information to help others. Today she is generating a $1,000,000 a year in revenue. Most of her sells are through affiliate marketing and blogging, as well as affiliate marketing courses.
You’ve probably come across at least one blog in your online search history without even realizing it.
What is the Difference Between a Blog and a Website?
A blog is like a website with logs. The name “web log” has then been shortened to “blog”. A blog thrives based off of quality and regularly updated content called “blog post”. The blog post can also be referred to as blog articles which are written and usually updated on a regular basis.
When visiting a blog, the first post you’ll see is the most recent post, because a blog appears in chronological order. The website you’re on right now is a blog and you happen to be reading a blog post.
Here is another example of a blog: Google has a blog, LifeHacker, NicheHacks
To Identify a Blog This is What You’ll Find:
- Regularly updated content
- Commenting area that allows readers to engage and communicate with the blogger
- Email joining list
- The date the post was written
- Category of the post
Blogs can be easily started in many ways such as with WordPress which is what I use through Wealthy Affiliate and Blogger which is offered through Google. Google blogger and WorPress are completely free to get started.
A website can be anything, like Wealthy Affiliate. It’s like an internet marketing university. Actually, one of the best part in my opinion. That website can be updated but not on a daily basis. The people in the community may update with new training however, the website itself is not updating on a daily basis.
It holds 1,000,000 members and it is fully functional. A website can also have a blog integrated for easier management. WordPress can be used to create the website and blog.
Here are examples of websites with blogs: EverNote Swagbucks, Google Cloud
How Does a Blog Work?
Have you ever been approached with an opportunity or information that you had no clue as to what it was? How it would benefit you? How it worked? Better yet you wanted to speak to someone but, couldn’t.
Well, I have been through all the above. There have been many times, where someone will present something to me and the opportunity at hand was just not clear. There has been times when I was in a rush & just wanted to make a clear decision and read the information on my leisure time. And there has been many times when I wanted to contact someone and actually receive a response by the site owner but couldn’t.
Today it is not unusual for people to read blogs on a daily. Why? Because, a blog attracts, informs, educates, and captivates the audience. Your blog gives you the opportunity to get feedback and in some cases provide customer service. A blog is a website that allows you to inform and educate your audience so that they can make a more informed decision.

Who is a Blog For?
This is a tricky question. Anyone can start a blog but it is not for everyone, it’s best to understand what you really want to do. Do you want to be able to update your content on a regular basis? You don’t need to have an English major and you certainly don’t need to know how to write.
Overtime, as you’re writing content you will improve on your writing skills. Are you interested in learning SEO marketing? Building a relationship with your audience, becoming an authority figure or branding yourself or company and having a permanent home on the web. A blog may just be for you!
Or Do You Prefer a Website?
A website may need coding and can be costly when you’re building it out to a professional look. The more a website grows the more it can cost. Blogs are cost effective and as it grows the cost is not as much as a website. The good thing is WordPress can be used as either a website or a blog.
A blog also requires you to write, it requires time, and coming up with content. Of course, as you build your business you can always hire writers but, until then you’ll have to do the content writing. So, if this is not something that you are interested in then a blog may not be for you! Like I said earlier, you don’t need to write perfectly, you’ll learn as I did. And, I am still trying to improve.
What is Blog Marketing
By now, you should get the concept of what a blog is, but what is blog marketing? Nowadays, most business owners use social media to market their business website. Most business websites were not built by the business owner themselves but, were provided to the business owner by their affiliated company.
The business owner will either take that same website and market via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or PinTerest but, if any of these sites were to ever ban you or shut down which I don’t think will happen anytime soon. You will be left without a following, left out in the cold with no home to go back to, and left without a website in some cases.
There has been times when affiliate programs have stopped doing business. In other cases the business owner takes a different route in their business and no longer affiliates with the same sources. So, in essence there have been times when life happens and people change business directions.
With a blog you’ll always have your own stage. Whether you brand yourself or your company name. You can go in any direction with a blog. I like to call a blog your “Online Real Estate” or “Virtual Real Estate”. What is online real estate, it is your Virtual business building, just as any other physical business building it has a location on the side of the street. Your online business will have location, located on the internet.
Why is a Blog Recommended?
You’ll have a location to where your audience can come and engage with you, while you create your content. It’s an opportunity to inform, educate, and attract your target market.
Your audience will gain trust with you through your blog by building a connection with them. If any of the above ever happened, you’ll always have business exposure once your blog ranks into Google. To gain even more exposure. Marketing a blog on any social platform is an option.
Blogging Tools & Training
Blogging tools and training will really depend on where or what company you start your blog with. For example if you were to start your blog with Google Blogger. They have a help center, help forum, and video tutorials but, no actual real community of people that will be able to support you while you are going through the building phase of your blog.
On the other hand, If you were to create a blog with Wealthy Affiliate which, is an internet marketing training community. In the training you’ll learn exactly how to set up your blog within 30 seconds or less. You’ll also learn the 4 steps that it takes to create a successful business online with a blog.
There are additional benefits with joining the WA community as a free starter member you’ll get two free websites, two free SiteRubix domain names, free hosting, and action based step by step training provided by text and video training.
Google Blogger support is through the help center, help forums, or video training. You can also find training on YouTube by just typing in Google blogger tutorials.
A blog with Wealthy Affiliate will give you all the training and support that you need to be successful online. You’ll get support 24/7 via chat box or just simply asking the community members for help. There is also SiteSupport who is available 24/7 as well.
SiteSupport responds within 5 minutes or less. Any question you may have will always get answered. You’ll learn how to start and grow your blog. It couldn’t get any better than that!
A blog is free to start with Google Blogger and Wealthy Affiliate.
My Final Opinion of What is A Blog in Marketing?
Honestly, I always wondered how to start blogging but, never knew how. I love to write, learn, and help others. Blogging is a great way for me to combine all three passions. Did I know how to blog before I started?
No, absolutely not! I didn’t know how to blog, nor did I know where to get started and I definitely had no idea on what to write about. After joining Wealthy Affiliate I learned to do to build a blog.
Furthermore, I never knew an individual could make money by blogging. Bloggers make money through affiliate marketing and by creating their own products.
Blogging does take time to do and you’ll have to always come up with content ideas. If you start a blog pick something that you are passionate about or a topic that you wouldn’t mind learning. If you are passionate about a certain topic then it will be easier for you to push out articles.
It does take time to gain traction with a blog, however, if you are constantly updating your post and always trying to improve on the quality of your content. Your blog can gain traction in no time. I personally would highly recommend a blog because, like I said it is a virtual business building where you’ll always have a home and you can build multiple income streams with a blog.
In addition to that a blog can provide you with Free traffic if SEO is properly learned. Marketing everyday will not be problem once, your blog has gained traction and ranked into Google and you have gained exposure.
